Latest iOS 6.1.3 update will kill Evasi0n

“All good jailbreaks must come to an end,” Andy Greenberg reports for Forbes. “Late last week Apple released an update for iOS to developers in beta that prevents the use of the popular jailbreak software evasi0n, according to one of evasi0n’s creators who tested the patch over the weekend, David Wang,” Greenberg reports. “Wang tells me that he’s analyzed the 6.1.3 beta 2 update and found that it patches at least one of the five bugs the jailbreak exploits, namely a flaw in the operating system’s time zone settings.”

Greenberg reports, “The beta update likely signals the end of using evasi0n to hack new or updated devices after the update is released to users, says Wang, who says he’s still testing the patch to see which other vulnerabilities exploited by the jailbreak might no longer exist in the new operating system. ‘If one of the vulnerabilities doesn’t work, evasi0n doesn’t work,’ he says. ‘We could replace that part with a different vulnerability, but [Apple] will probably fix most if not all of the bugs we’ve used when 6.1.3 comes out.’”

Released less than a month ago, Evasi0n was quickly adopted by users wanting greater control over system-level device functions usually reserved for Apple’s first-party apps. It was reported in early February that the jailbreak had been downloaded over seven million times in just four days. Evasi0n was dealt a temporary setback when iOS 6.1.1 was released in mid February, but a subsequent jailbreak version was swiftly issued to bring back support for all iOS devices, including Apple’s flagship iPhone 5 and new iPad mini.

Evasi0n 1.3 already available for iOS 6.1.1

on Tuesday the Evad3rs team presented an update for the Evasi0n jailbreak tool, fixing bugs found in the initial software while adding support for the Apple’s iOS 6.1.1 mobile operating system just one day after its release.

Apple’s release of iOS 6.1.1 on Monday broke compatibility with the software hack, but version 1.3 brings back support for all iOS devices, including the iPhone 5 and iPad mini. Apple’s iOS release targeted battery life and 3G issues seen by some iPhone 4S users, and was not meant to patch the Evasi0n exploit.

After launching last week, version 1.3 of the Evasi0n jailbreak is now available to the public, allowing iPhone, iPad and iPod touch owners to liberate any device running iOS 6, 6.1 and 6.1.1.
Numerous reports noted that Evasi0n was downloaded over seven million times in four days. Thus, this very version is the most popular in iOS history.
Available on OS X, Windows and Linux, the infinite hack allows users to jailbreak their devices without having to connect to a computer.
It should be noted that the process of jailbreaking is legal, but will void the supplied Apple warranty as it leverages exploits in the iOS software to run unauthorized code.

Chuck Norris Facts for Siri

I spoke in a previous article about a useful AssistantExtensios add-on, BatteryLevelAE, which gives you voice notifications about your battery status, under several circumstances. Now, I want to present you a funny, entertaining one. Chuck Norris fans will surely like it: Chuck Norris Facts for ChatBot/Siri, which practically spits random Chuck Norris facts every time you say his name.

In order to use this feature, you need to have an iOS device with Siri and AssistantExtensions installed. To get it started, just go and download from Cydia store, it’s free. Firstly, enable the chatty Siri by saying “Let’s chat” and then you can say “Chuck Norris” to see a funny fact about Chuck Norris on your screen. It doesn’t need other configuration or settings, once installed, it is ready to use. Loading the chatty Siri might take around one minute, it’s the normal behavior. For the moment, there are several facts to keep you busy for a while and the developer promises to add much many, in a future update.

So, this app is designed especially for Chuck Norris facts fans, it does not have any other useful functionality. I think you should give it a try.

Have in-depth battery information from Siri with BatteryLevelAE tweak

There are many tweaks in Cydia trying to manage and give notifications about your battery life status. But the AssistantExtensions add-on, BatteryLevelAE, is incredibly capable under several circumstances: it can provide time left when talking on the phone, listening to music, and much more depending on the query you choose to use.

It works really simple: once you have installed this tweak on your iPhone, you can say “battery help menu” and Siri will show you the different kind of queries you can use.

The possibilities are:

  • How much standby time do I have?
  • How much talk time do I have?
  • How much audio time do I have?
  • How much video time do I have?
  • How much internet time do I have?
  • How much battery life do I have?

This kind of environmental estimates is more useful to get an accurate idea about how much your battery will last.

Developer, Bilal S. Sayed Ahmad, plans to make possible activating power profiles through Siri and custom presets to save battery when don’t need some features enabled. So, don’t miss further updates, this add-on could be exactly what you need. It only costs $1 in Cydia now.

New significant updates came to Cydia jailbreak app Aloud

If you didn’t hear about this app until now, then you should know what it basically does: it reads out loud iOS notification messages as soon as they come, so you could always be up-to-date, even when you are not using your device, being busy with something else.

Aloud jailbreak app offers many useful configuration settings as System State, Current Date/Time, Don’t speak in-call, and many others. Of course, you need to have your device jailbroken and running iOS 5+, in order to use it. Better watch this good video from iDownloadBlog folks to understand how it works:

Well, I have more good news for you: yesterday Aloud version 1.1 arrived on Cydia store, and it is now available to download. I guess these are great enhancements but I’ll let you see on your own the full list of features:

  • Set delays before speaking notifications
  • Override the device’s volume
  • Support for Bluetooth headsets
  • Pause music as a notification is being announced and then resume
  • Keep Aloud from voicing your alerts except when on a certain Wi-Fi network
  • Keep Aloud from voicing your alerts when in certain applications
  • Read entire e-mails
  • A more human-like announcement instead of the robot-like diction, which was being used
  • Speak just the time instead of both time and date
  • Toggle Aloud on and off with an Activator action
  • Support for a new Aloud SBSettings toggle
  • Speak all notifications not cleared from Notification Center
  • The possibility to have Aloud announce the name of the person calling you
  • Support for Notificator notification announcements
  • Random bug fixes
  • Announce directions from the Maps application
  • Announce the directions step by step in the Maps application after you complete a step in getting somewhere

I guess it really deserves trying, especially for the Maps application giving step-by-step directions, which is a good alternative to other expensive GPS solutions.

I don’t know if you like it, but the new voice system it’s more human now, so you won’t feel like in a cyborg movie anymore.

It only costs $1.99 for new customers in Cydia, so I wait you try it and tell me your impressions.

Set up custom gestures with Activator for iPhone and iPad

For those who didn’t hear about Activator, it is a powerful jailbreak for iPhone and iPad which allows you to quickly launch apps or utilities with a tap or button press. The app is free on Cydia and has been developed by Ryan Petrich. It is used especially to launch Overboard and ProSwitcher apps with gestures and shortcuts, status bar taps, and hardware button presses.

If your device is jailbroken, there are big chances to already have Activator installed, as it is a pre-requisite for many applications and Utilities in Cydia. Firstly, just go to the Settings app to check if you already have it. If you don’t see it there, install it for free via Cydia. Don’t forget to restart the Springboard or Home screen app after installation.

There are many ways of customizing Activator to launch apps or system actions. For example, swipe up from the bottom of the screen and you will quickly be able to compose a text, shake your device to start de camera or double tap the status bar to see the SBSettings. The system actions available are home button, power down, reboot, respring, safe mode and sleep button.

You just have to realize how powerful this tool is, get creative and start setting up your own useful gestures and shortcuts. Follow these simple steps:

  • Go to the Settings app.
  • Tap Activator.
  • Choose how to trigger an action.
  • Choose what the action will do.
  • Choose supported apps.

Will the Jailbreaking Exemption Law be renewed?

The protection granted by U.S Copyright Office for users who change their iPhones and iOS devices in order to install applications not approved by Apple (also called “jailbreaking”) will expire soon. Without this protection many users with a jailbroken iOS device will face legal issues but currently, jailbreaking your Apple device will only void your device’s warranty. But organizations like EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) are making efforts to sign a petition for this law renewal.

“The idea that you might face criminal charges because you altered your own property is totally unfair,” said Rebecca Jeschke, media relations director and digital rights analyst for the EFF. “The goal here is to make the law really clear.”

Jailbreaking devices is useful to cover security issues or to install third-party apps which are not available for free in the AppStore. Most users prefer it generally for the freedom and customizability it provides. According to ReadWriteWeb, nearly 1 million users jailbroke their devices in a weekend, after the launch of the Absinthe A5 tool.

Apple released a software update last year for the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, iPad 2 and iPad, and the 3rd and 4th generations of the iPod Touch. Beside some improvements, the update also prevented users from jailbreaking the phone with JailBreakMe 3.0.

Do you think jailbreaking should be considered a violation of Apple’s rights or you believe that once you bought the product, you can do whatever you want with it?

Tweet by voice with Sireet Cydia Tweak for Siri

Along with the interest showed by Apple community regarding Siri, the jailbreak developers also worked hard to improve this experience and they succeeded to introduce Sireet, a new Cydia tweak which allows you to send tweets with voice by using Siri.

The application has been launched into Cydia and it is ready to download and install for your iPhone 4S. You just have to go through settings.application to check Twitter configuration, and then speak “Tweet, whatever you want to say.” Immediately, Sireet will handle most of the job by automatically creating a tweet from what you’ve just said. To understand better how to use Sireet, please watch this video:

Apple also promised to release an update for Siri which will include deeply Twitter integration, having the same functionality as Sireet but it is considered being lazier compared to the jailbreak version.

If you are interested in this tweak, you can find it in Cydia store through ModMyi repo for free. Have a nice experience using Siri!

Note: the tweak can be installed only on a jailbroken iPhone.
