Apple’s iPad outmatched Windows 8

With Apple’s iPad dominating the new wave of computing, Microsoft’s Windows 8 is floundering and the software giant is slashing prices even as its manufacturing partners are dropping some Windows devices.
The Wall Street Journal carried a report on Tuesday that Microsoft has begun offering price breaks to manufacturers in order to jumpstart development of small, touch-enabled laptops. In late February, sources say Microsoft began offering PC makers Windows 8 and Office for $30 for touchscreen devices under 10.8 inches, down from a previous point of about $120. The company is also discounting Windows 8 for touchscreen devices above 10.8 inches, though Office isn’t included in the deal for those units.

That 10.8-inch screen size distinction is important to Microsoft because it’s around the size of Apple’s standard iPad, which — when counted along with regular PC sales — has made Apple into one of the only computer manufacturers to see sales growth even as the larger PC market has slumped. Consumers are increasingly opting for smartphones and tablets, specifically the iPad, over traditional PC form factors, leaving Microsoft and most of its PC maker partners in the lurch.

Microsoft developed the touch-enabled Windows 8 in an effort to counter this trend. It also developed Windows RT in parallel to deliver much of Windows 8′s functionality on power-sipping ARM processors. Late in 2012, more than two years after the debut of the iPad, Microsoft announced Windows 8′s launch with the start of a $1 billion ad campaign.
Shortly thereafter, though, reports emerged that initial sales were “well below” Microsoft’s internal projections. Microsoft sold millions of licenses to PC manufacturers for the OS’ launch, but public interest post-launch seemed to be lagging, with a soft economy keeping consumers tied to their current, Windows 7-running PCs or opting for mobile devices running Android or iOS.

Microsoft’s own Surface RT and Surface Pro hybrid tablets, despite the hype the company built around them, debuted to middling critical receptions at best. Maligned for being neither great laptops nor great tablets, the devices have seen weak sales considering the marketing push behind them.

The Journal quotes Asus CEO Jerry Shen as saying that Microsoft is taking steps to stimulate demand for Windows 8 devices, though Shen would not elaborate on what such steps might include. Shen did say, though, that Microsoft’s efforts will be aimed at helping Asus produce more mainstream-priced touchscreen Windows 8 devices in the third and fourth quarter of this year.

Meanwhile, German publication heise online claims that Samsung will stop selling its Windows RT-based Ativ Tab in Germany, due to weak demand. Samsung already confirmed in January that it would not be launching Windows RT tablets in the United States, with an executive pointing to “modest” demand for the stripped-down ARM Windows.

Yesterday Apple added its new 128GB iPad to the Apple Store . It`s supposed that any order will be shipped within 1-3 days.

The new device comes in two models: Wi-Fi only ($799) and Wi-Fi+LTE ($929). Previously, the 9.7-inch iPad with retina display was available only with 16GB, 32GB or 64GB of storage.

Astonishing colors on the new iPad

The new third generation of iPad is capable of more than you imagined so far, and now I wonder, can your imagination picture something in so many and so rich colors such as to turn your thoughts into lifelike experiences?

iPad Product Marketing, Scott Brodrick, introduces the new iPad in a way that I fancy:

“The display is what the iPad is all about. When you enhance the display, you enhance everything.”

And I agree. The Retina Display is the most attractive aspect of the new iPad and what brings the changes to this third generation; it is neither a new name nor a new design. It’s all about the iPad’s capability of reproducing detailed images that feel truly lifelike.

Once with the display, Apple improved all other important elements of the iPad that can back up the stunning graphic performance, namely the new A5X quad core chip for a smoother pixel experience, a 5MP iSight Camera and an efficient battery that has a 10 hours life.

The new iPad integrates the highest resolution display that no other mobile device disposes so far.  It features four times more pixels than the iPad 2 and a million more than a HDTV. Besides, the speed of the 4G LTE connection and the new apps for music, movies and photos turns the new iPad into the most pleasant and attractive way of experiencing technology.

The new iPad is here – revolution with no second name

The Apple event just ended and I thought that the new iPad will have a name! I was expecting the name till the end and it didn’t come! It was confusing because there already is an iPad (the first one) and there is an iPad 2 that is older than iPad(the new one). So we can call it “The New iPad” !

Why Apple would prefer to renounce the HD or 3 designation for the new iPad?

  • In the good Apple tradition on the computer market I think that they do not want to introduce to many names for their products but rather keep innovating where maters. We can take a look at some examples at the Apple laptop products: MacBook, MacBook Air and that’s it (MacBook White is no longer on the market).
  • Apple is the dominant player in the tablet market and saying that all you need is the new iPad, not HD not 3, just iPad! We all know that Apple has a very effective marketing machine that can change even the dictionary by replacing the term “tablet” with “iPad”.  In fact, Apple is saying that “iPad” is the tablet market!

What name can we expect for the iPhone 5? The new iPhone?

Here are the prices for the new iPad and for the iPad 2. I will write more about this later!

Apple committing some last significant changes till the iPad 3 launch

It seems that the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts is not the only location that gets reshaped for the iPad 3 launch; also the App Store for iPad got revamped.

Few hours ago a new Top Charts and a new category appeared on the App Store. The new Top Charts begins with a list of kids apps and changed the vertical scroll with the sideways one. During the last year, thousands of shopping entertainment apps appeared in the “Lifestyle” category. Apparently, Apple considered that these apps should have their own place on the App Store and added a new item on the list, namely the “Catalogs” category which appears under the “Business” one.

Catalog Spree, the leader catalog shopping app was the first to be categorized under “Catalogs”. Currently the empty space got filled and surely more catalogs will appear until tomorrow’s Apple event.

Meanwhile, Google is also planning to revamp the Android Market. In about a week, the Android Market home icon will be redesigned and it will appear as “Google Play Store.” Under the “Google Play” brand users will find all the e-books, movies and music apps integrated by the Android Market. Google will also bind the Web-based Android Market with Google Music and with the e-bookstore under a single brand.

iPad 3

iPad 3 concept as pictured by AatamaStudio

The days till people will get to see the third generation iPad are diminishing, increasing at the same time all the tension that revolves round this event. The greatest curiosity that wanders all over the world questions the design of the iPad 3, which of late is rumored to be named iPad HD.

Aatama Studio recently developed an astonishing iPad 3 concept that features edge-to-edge retina display, NFC (Near Field Communication) technology backed by internal magnets and 3D multiplayer hologram.

The iPad 3 as designed by Aatama Studio is really thin, looking almost fragile, but fragile things are also valuable. There’s no doubt that the edge-to-edge screen rends the elegance of this tablet to its maximum, but it might also have some glitches; an accidental touch on one of the edges might interfere with your activity. A multi-touch capability should banish such fears.

Due to the NFC and to the internal magnets one can bring two iPads together, taking the tablet experience to the next level. You can watch movies in HD or play your favorite game. Moreover, the holographic 3D display can increase the gaming area and can throw you more into the game.

Getting back to reality, I wonder if this concept gave Apple some ideas. Judging after the manufacturing rumors, I believe it hadn’t. And I also wonder whether it manages to steady the freeze or on the contrary, it pours more gas on the flames.

iPad 3 rumored to be known as iPad HD

Reliable sources from CNet came with the following statement:

A developer who’s previously provided reliable information with respect to things Apple and otherwise tells us the next iPad uses the HD moniker instead of going with “iPad 3.”

The HD surname was also “wondering around” on lists with cases from Griffin especially made for gadgets known as “iPad HD (3)”. HD may refear to the big upgrade that the latest version of the iPad has integrated, namely the high-definition Retina Display. Everybody is still asking if the name is already in use and it seems that there appears an iPadHD.com, domain registered before the big announcement of the iPad in 2010 and there is no sign of Apple’s bond with the existing domain.

The rumor about an “iPad HD” first appeared in July 2011 as a high-end gadget that was destined more for professional ones. Also, it’s stated that there would not be a big difference between the latest version of the iPad and the previous one in terms of price.

It only remains to wait for Apple’s big launch on Wed, March 7th at Yerba Buena and be enlightened once and for all.
