Apple’s names attract criticism

Apple has traditionally been a company to prefer  simplicity and brevity creating its products. This principle was used to name new devices, giving up high-profile names in favor of letters and numbers.

However, this approach is not approved by everyone. Former consultant Apple Ken Segall believes that the current practice of naming products harms the company. He is sure that the principle, when after every release of a new model a new update with the letter «S» comes out, looks rather awkward. Adding “S” to an already existing model  and releasing it on the market, looks like conferming that his model is not worthy a unique name, as it received only minor improvements.

Ken Segall worked with Apple for a long period of time, first as a creative director of the advertising agency, and later as a consultant.  As a member of Jobs team, Segall took part in creation of the brand iMac and a famous campaign Think Different as well.

Criticism of the former employee came upon  the campaign on releasing new products with the prefix «new» in the title. It should be noted that using such step for the release of  the third generation «new iPad», the company did not practice it for the iPhone and iPad of the fourth generation.

Such criticism is controversial. We shouldn’t  forget that, despite the names of products, each new generation iPhone is sold better than the previous one.

Siri vs. S Voice in a Features Competition

Samsung’s Galaxy S3 came with a personal assistant very similar to iPhone 4S’ Siri, called S Voice. Judging by appearances the two are much alike having an almost similar interface, thus, expecting also the same performances from both Siri and S Voice.

Folks from Mobile Burn put the two personal assistants to a features test, showing which of them is more responsive, more spontaneous in helping you and whose answers are the most accurate.

Some users think that even though Apple invented the voice assistant, it is Samsung who made the technology brilliant by enhancing Siri. The following video shows how Siri and S Voice react to different questions proving that both have issues and concluding with a balanced competition. Also one may conclude that, overall, S Voice is similar to Siri and not an enhanced version of it as some had expected.

Durability test: iPhone 4S vs. Galaxy S3

How much damage can a smartphone bear up and which of the iPhone 4S or Samsung’s new Galaxy S3 will prove to be more durable?

The independent warranty provider, Square Trade put Samsung and Apple’s latest smartphone models to three different tests that were simulating the three most often cases for which people complaint about when asking for e new phone.

First, the iPhone 4S and the Galaxy S3 were dropped from the ear level at the same time. For the second test, two little boys were asked to throw the phones up in the air and I must say they seem to have enjoyed it. Finally, the smartphones slid from the back trunk of a car that drove away.

Check the video to see which of the iPhone 4S or Galaxy S3 made a better impression of durability and remember to take into account also the manufacturing materials of both devices when judging the results.

Siri commercials featuring Samuel L Jackson and Zooey Deschanel

Of late, Siri commercials for Sprint AT&T and Verizon featuring great celebrity names started to sprang. The first spot of this kind, starring Samuel L Jackson, was aired about two days ago on ESPN, while yesterday’s evening the Zooey Deschanel spot appeared on different channels, including Fox. It seems though that none of this spots are official as they haven’t been introduced on Apple’s official site or on its YouTube channel, but both of them are marked with the Apple logo.

Each of the spot’s themes seems to perfectly frame the character of the two actors. Samuel L Jackson is preparing a home dinner for his date in his particular tough-minded way while being helped by the personal assistant Siri and Zooey takes advantage of the rainy day and starts an indoors fun with Siri’s help.

Contrary to other commercials from Apple, those two are focused more on the story of a celebrity, in which Siri makes a lovely and helpful presence, instead of being focused on the device. And I have a feeling that more artist will appear in such commercials.

Update: Yesterday, April 18, both commercials appeared as official on Apple’s YouTube channel.

Lawsuit against Apple: Siri seen as a simply “work in progress”

Through an extensive and comprehensive nationwide marketing campaign, Defendant has conveyedthe misleading and deceptive message that the iPhone 4S’s Siri feature, a so-called voice-activated assistant, performs useful functions and otherwise works as advertised.

For example, in many of Alpple’s television advertisements, individuals are shown using SIri to make appointments, find restaurants, and even learn the guitar chords to classic rock songs or how to tie a tie. In the commercials, all of these tasks are done with ease with the assistance of the iPhone 4S’s feature, a represented functionality contrary to the actual operating results and performance of Siri.

These were the words of Frank M Fazio (individually and on behalf of all others similarly situated) that tend to sue the Apple Company for providing false advertising, introducing “a misleading and deceptive message” about the capabilities of the personal virtual assistant. A lot of debates have been rumbling around about Siri, that it’s not perfect but it surely comes in handy.

We also attached one of Apple’s ads for highlighting what was stated above:

Why Siri can’t be integrated in the iPhone 4

Since the October release of the iPhone 4S, everybody was suspicious and curious about the differences between the old gadget and the band new one. If we were to analyze the two devices in detail, few things would be remarked from an exterior perspective.

What surely made the latest version of the iPhone, namely iPhone 4S chuckle over success was the virtual personal assistant Siri. It’s said that Siri had come to the iPhone 4S as to establish the difference between the two devices. After the October release, there was an attempt of integrating the personal assistant to a previous version of the iPhone.

Now sources highlight the fact that Siri can’t be integrated in the iPhone 4 because it does not possess a certain noise cancellation circuitry that is encountered in the iPhone 4S’s  A5 CPU.

CNet states:

Apple’s A5 processor includes noise-reduction circuitry licensed from a start-up called Audience, and a chip analyst believes that fact resolves an iPhone 4S mystery and explains why the iPhone 4 lacks the Siri voice-control system.

Audience revealed details of its Apple partnership in January, when it filed paperwork for an initial public offering (IPO) of stock. Teardown work from iFixit and Chipworks revealed a dedicated Audience chip in the iPhone 4, but the iPhone 4S integrates Audience’s “EarSmart” technology directly into the A5 processor, the company’s S-1 filing said.

The details answered a question that Linley Group analyst Linley Gwennap had about the A5 chip that powers the iPhone 4S: why is it so big? Larger processors are more expensive and can consume more power, and chip designers strive to trim every last square millimeter from their designs.

Possibility of launching Siri right from a Home Screen Icon

SiriBoard Cydia Tweak provides the possibility of enabling the virtual personal assistant Siri from an app icon.

Siri could be launched either by holding down the Home button or going for the “Raise To Speak” feature. Now users can turn to another direction, use SiriBoard with just a touch.

So download and install the app for allowing Siri to come with useful pieces of advice or indications. Coming with the Siri picture as icon, the app will appear on the Home screen after the jailkbreak package has been installed.

SiriBoard comes in handy to those that are sick and tired of activating the personal assistant whenever they need a piece of information by holding down the Home button for a couple of moments.

Redmond Pie provides the following description of the app:

“SiriBoard is very similar to the LockAssistant offering (also developer by Freemanrepo) in the sense that it gives quick, one touch access to the activation of Siri making it not only quicker, but also taking the strain off the poor home button. SiriBoard is a very simplistic tweak which in no way offers any additional functionality to Siri as it merely exists to offer a quick launch solution for the voice analysis software.”
