Sony joined the team of in-cell display suppliers for iPhone 5

Sony Mobile Display joined the Japanese fellows, Sharp Corp and Toshiba Mobile Display, and the South Korean LG Display in supplying the in-cell panels to match Apple’s next-generation iPhone.

IHS Displaybank senior analyst Stone Wu said that Sony began mass production of in-cell touch panels in February, while the other three companies will start the panels’ production somewhere at the end of this month.

This announcement proves that the new iPhone will definitely be thinner. In-cell technology places the touch sensors inside the color filters, unlike the on-cell technology that places the sensors on top of the color filters.

Also the Taiwanese flat-panel maker AUO (AU Optronics Corp.) is expected to contribute to panel production, but the company will begin shipping only in the third or in the fourth quarter.
